A wiki farm is a server or an array of servers that provides hosting for multiple wikis. A server is a Computer dedicated to providing one or more services over a computer network typically through a request-response routine A server farm or server cluster is a collection of Computer servers usually maintained by an enterprise to accomplish server needs far beyond the capability A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content using a simplified Markup language. Wiki farms are also known as "hosted wiki service providers. "
Before wiki farms were available, users who wanted to share information on-line through a Wiki devoted to their own subject, had to install a Wiki server of their own, configure it, connect it to the Internet and maintain it. With wiki farms this process is greatly simplified. In order to operate a wiki on a wiki farm nowadays, there is no need to get a private web server and to install Wiki software.
Non-commercial and commercial Wiki farms are available for users and online communities. A non-commercial enterprise is work that values other considerations above and beyond that of making a profit While most of the wiki farms allow anyone to open their own Wiki, some impose restrictions.
Many wiki farm companies generate revenue through the insertion of advertisements, but often allow payment of a monthly fee as an alternative to accepting ads. Advertising is a form of Communication that typically attempts to persuade potential Customers to Purchase or to consume more of a particular Brand
The Wikis on the wiki farms are normally provided with a standard layout, or a choice of layouts, usually known as skins. Some wiki farms allow the layout to be customised using cascading style sheets (css).
