History
The first Clover store opened in 1971. The management of Strawbridge & Clothier based their Clover store format on Dayton Hudson's Target store chain. Target Corporation ( is an American Retailing company that was founded in Minneapolis Minnesota in 1902 The similarities to Target were evident throughout the life of Clover. The earliest locations incuded a food store (Clovermarket) adjacent to the main store. L. U. S. (an A&P no-frills format).
In 1978, Strawbridge & Clothier, deveoped two mini-malls next to thier Cinnaminson and Center Square stores, that were named Clover Square. These had a mixture of national and regional chains and independant stores. The malls opened with a food court in one corner of the square-shaped coridor. These malls later became Outlet Square managed by the Rouse Company. Now, they are both supermarkets.
In 1996, the May Department Stores purchased Strawbridges, but much of the Clover chain was bought by Kimco Realty Corporation. The May Department Stores Company was a national Department store chain in the United States, founded in 1877 by David May Kimco Realty Corporation, ( is a Real Estate Investment Trust, founded in 1960 by Martin Kimmel and Milton Cooper with "Kimco" being a contraction of their (5 Clover stores were purchased by Kohl's. Kohl's Corporation ( is an American Department store chain headquartered in Menomonee Falls Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee. ) Kimco liquidated and closed the Clover stores.
Strawbridge's parent, May Department Stores, was sold to Federated Department Stores in 2006 and the Strawbridge's name was rebranded in favor for Macy's.
