Zien was born Jerome Herbert Zien in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Whitefish Bay High School. Whitefish Bay High School is a comprehensive public Secondary school located in the village of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, United States. He then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the President of Mask & Wig, the nation's oldest all-male collegiate musical comedy troupe. The Mask and Wig Club, founded in 1889 by Clayton Fotterall McMichael, is the oldest all-male collegiate musical comedy troupe in the United States. Since then he has appeared in numerous stage, screen and TV roles. He is probably best known for playing the lead role of the Baker in the original Broadway production of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim; his first major role, though, was Marvin in William Finn's first musical, In Trousers.
