The history of the region is largely influenced by the neighbouring cities of Chemnitz and Zwickau. Zwickau (ˈtsvɪkaʊ̯ Cvikov is a city in Germany, in the Bundesland Sachsen (Saxony situated in a valley at the foot of the Erzgebirge In medieval times the town of Glauchau, today the capital of the district, was the centre of the county of Schönburg-Glauchau. The East German government attempted to turn the region in a huge industrial complex, which is the reason for the dense population. The district was established in 1994 by merging the former districts of Glauchau and Hohenstein-Ernstthal.
Once a densely forested region, Chemnitzer Land now is a highly urbanised region with few green areas left. The Zwickauer Mulde river runs through the northernmost part of the district. The Mulde (ˈmʊldə is a River in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
