The parish consists of two villages, Charlton Mackrell and Charlton Adam, together known as "The Charltons". Both villages have approximately similar populations. There are also small settlements at Lytes Cary, Cary Fitzpaine (east of the A37 Fosse Way) and West Charlton. The A37 is a major Road in southern England. It runs north from the A35 at Dorchester in Dorset into Somerset through The Fosse Way was a Roman road in England that linked Exeter ( Isca Dumnoniorum) in South West England to Lincoln West Charlton is the shrunken remains of the original village of Charlton Mackrell.

The Charltons have been home to several of the ancestors of politicians in the United States of America. The Church of St Mary in West Charlton dates from the 13th century. [3] The Church of St Peter and St Paul, on church hill is slightly more recent. [4]
