Charlevoix is named after Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a French explorer who travelled the Great Lakes and was that to have stayed the night on Fisherman's Island one night during a harsh storm. There was significant controversy in the 1990s over the decision to extend water pipes into rural farmland south of Charlevoix in order to build a new Charlevoix High School.
