Charles Messier
Charles Messier

Charles Messier (June 26, 1730April 12, 1817) was a French astronomer most notable for publishing an astronomical catalog consisting of deep sky objects such as nebulae and star clusters that came to be known as the 103 "Messier objects". Messier's life

Messier was born in Badonviller in the Lorraine region of France, the 10th of 12 children of catchpole Nicolas Messier and Francoise b. Catchpole is a rare Surname derived from a law enforcement implement found in Medieval England. Grandblaise. Six of his brothers and sisters died young, and in 1741, his father died. Charles' interest in astronomy was stimulated by the appearance of a great six-tailed comet in 1744 and by an annular solar eclipse visible from his hometown on July 25, 1748. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is wholly or partially obscured Events 285 - Diocletian appoints Maximian as Caesar, co-ruler Year 1748 ( MDCCXLVIII) was a Leap year starting on Monday (link will display the full calendar of the Gregorian calendar (or a

In 1751 he entered the employ of Joseph Nicolas Delisle, the astronomer of the French Navy, who instructed him to keep careful records of his observations. In 1764, he was made a fellow of the Royal Society, and on June 30, 1770, he was elected to the French Academy of Sciences

The first version of Messier's catalogue contained 45 objects and was published in 1774 in the journal of the French Academy of Sciences in Paris. The Messier objects are a set of astronomical objects catalogued by Charles Messier in his "Catalogue des Nébuleuses et des Amas d'Étoiles" ("Catalogue of Nebulae On several different occasions between 1921 and 1966, astronomers and historians discovered evidence of another seven deep-sky objects that were observed either by Messier or his friend and assistant Pierre Mechain shortly after the final version was published. Pierre François André Méchain ( August 16, 1744 &ndash September 20, 1804) was a French Astronomer and surveyor These seven objects, M104 through M110, are accepted by many astronomers as "official" Messier objects. The Sombrero Galaxy (also known as M 104 or NGC 4594) is an unbarred Spiral galaxy in the Constellation Messier 110 (also known as M110 and NGC 205) is a Dwarf elliptical galaxy that is a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy. The objects' designations, from M1 to M110, are still in use by professional and amateur astronomers today. The Crab Nebula  (catalogue designations M 1 NGC 1952 Taurus A is a Supernova remnant and Pulsar wind nebula in the Constellation Amateur astronomy, a subset of Astronomy, is a Hobby whose participants enjoy studying and observing celestial objects

The catalog is not scientifically organized by object type or by location (as the later New General Catalogue would be). The New General Catalogue ( NGC) is the best-known catalogue of Deep sky objects in Amateur astronomy. Nonetheless, the Messier catalog comprises examples of every known deep sky object, including galaxies, planetary nebulae, open clusters, and globular clusters. A galaxy is a massive gravitationally bound system consisting of Stars an Interstellar medium of gas and dust, and Dark matter A planetary nebula is an Emission nebula consisting of a glowing shell of Gas and plasma formed by certain types of Stars when they die An open cluster is a group of up to a few thousand Stars that were formed from the same Giant molecular cloud, and are still loosely gravitationally A globular cluster is a spherical collection of Stars that orbits a galactic core as a Satellite. Because these objects were accessible to the relatively small aperture telescope (approximately 102 mm, or 4 inches) used by Messier to study the sky, they are among the most spectacular deep sky objects available to modern amateur astronomers using much better equipment. A telescope is an instrument designed for the observation of remote objects and the collection of Electromagnetic radiation. Deep sky or Deep Sky Object (DSO for short which differs from Deep space, is a term used by amateur astronomers to describe mostly faint Astronomical objects outside Furthermore, almost all of the Messier objects are among the closest to our planet in their respective classes, which makes them heavily studied with professional class instruments that today can resolve very small and visually spectacular details in them. Professional astronomers still refer to objects by their Messier designation, and in amateur astronomy they are among the most frequently visited deep sky objects.

Many of the objects in the Messier catalog were discovered by his assistant Pierre Mechain. Pierre François André Méchain ( August 16, 1744 &ndash September 20, 1804) was a French Astronomer and surveyor

The Messier crater on the Moon and the asteroid 7359 Messier were named in his honor. Messier is a relatively young lunar Impact crater located on the Mare Fecunditatis. Asteroids, sometimes called Minor planets or planetoids', are bodies—primarily of the inner Solar System —that are smaller than planets but 7359 Messier (1996 BH is a Main-belt Asteroid discovered on January 16, 1996 by Klet at Klet
