Cathays railway station is a railway station lying on the Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda lines in the Cathays district of Cardiff, Wales. Merthyr Tydfil today Government The current Borough boundaries date back to 1974 when the former county borough of Merthyr Tydfil expanded slightly to cover Rhondda ('rɒnðɘ or Rhondda Valley ( Welsh: Cwm Rhondda) is a former coal-mining valley in Wales, consisting of 16 communities built around Cathays (kəˈteɪz Cattayz) is a district of the City of Cardiff, Wales. Cardiff ( 'kɑːdɪf) is the Capital and the largest city and county in Wales. The station is 2 kilometres (1¼ miles) north of Cardiff Central. Cardiff Central railway station (Caerdydd Canolog is a major British railway station on Central Square in Cardiff, Wales.
The station is located next to Cardiff University Students' Union, and is very popular with students/lecturers etc. Cardiff University Students' Union ( Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd in Welsh) is the Students' union for Cardiff University and the largest and government officials who work at Cathays Park. Cathays Park is a Civic centre area in central Cardiff, the Capital city of Wales, consisting of a number of early 20th century buildings The footbridge over the railway is also used by students as a shortcut between Park Place and Senghenydd Road.
Cathays station is now manned during peak hours, following the introduction of a new automated ticket barrier system in Summer 2007. Cathays has two platforms, both with a small shelter and an information screen displaying the next train's arrival. There is a car park on the Senghennydd Road side, which is University owned and not for general public use.
During the daytime from Monday to Saturday, there are usually six trains an hour from Cardiff Central to destinations including Pontypridd, Treherbert, Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare.
