Cary Village Mall opened in 1979 with Ivey's and Hudson Belk as anchors. Year 1979 ( MCMLXXIX) was a Common year starting on Monday (link displays the 1979 Gregorian calendar) Ivey's ( JB Ivey & Company) a former department store chain was acquired by Dillard's, Inc In 1991, the mall expanded, adding a food court and three new anchors: Thalhimer's, JC Penney, and Sears, and was renamed Cary Towne Center. Dillard's was added a year later, replacing the original Ivey's store which had been a tenant since 1979. Thalhimer's became Hecht's in 1992, which became Macy's in 2006.
