She was born in Brookfield, Wisconsin, the fifth of seven children of Henry Quiner and Charlotte (Tucker) Quiner. Brookfield is a city in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. She lost her father at the age of five in a shipping accident, reportedly on Lake Michigan, near the Straits of Mackinac. Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, and the only one located entirely within the United States.
