Effervescence from soda.
Effervescence from soda. Effervescence is the escape of gas from an aqueous solution The term is used to describe the foaming or fizzing that results from a release of gas

Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water and seltzer, is plain water into which carbon dioxide gas has been dissolved, and is the major and defining component of most "soft drinks". Water is a common Chemical substance that is essential for the survival of all known forms of Life. Carbon dioxide ( Chemical formula:) is a Chemical compound composed of two Oxygen Atoms covalently bonded to a single Soft drink is a beverage that does not contain Alcohol. Carbonated soft drinks are commonly known as soda soda pop pop, or The process of dissolving carbon dioxide gas is called carbonation. It results in the formation of carbonic acid (which has the chemical formula H2CO3). Carbonic acid (ancient name acid of air or aerial acid) has the formula H2CO3

In the past, soda water was produced in the home by "charging" a refillable seltzer bottle by filling it with water and then adding carbon dioxide. The soda syphon, also known as the seltzer bottle or syphon seltzer bottle is a device for dispensing Soda water. Carbon dioxide ( Chemical formula:) is a Chemical compound composed of two Oxygen Atoms covalently bonded to a single Club soda may be identical to plain carbonated water or it may contain a small amount of table salt, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium sulfate, or disodium phosphate, depending on the bottler. Salt is a Dietary mineral composed primarily of Sodium chloride that is essential for Animal life but toxic to most land plants Sodium citrate usually refers to Trisodium citrate, though it can refer to any of the sodium Salts of Citric acid: Monosodium citrate Sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate is the Chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3 Potassium bicarbonate (also known as potassium hydrogen carbonate or potassium acid carbonate) is a colorless odorless slightly basic, salty substance Potassium sulfate (K2SO4 (in British English potassium sulphate, also called sulphate of potash or archaically known as potash of sulfur Disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4 is a Sodium salt of Phosphoric acid. These additives are included to emulate the slightly salty taste of homemade soda water. The process can also occur naturally to produce carbonated mineral water, such as in Mihalkovo in the Bulgarian Rhodopes. History

Joseph Priestley first discovered a method of impregnating water with carbon dioxide when he suspended a bowl of water above a beer vat at a local brewery in Leeds, England. Joseph Priestley (13 March 1733 ( Old Leeds ( is located on the River Aire in West Yorkshire, England England is a Country which is part of the United Kingdom. Its inhabitants account for more than 83% of the total UK population whilst its mainland The air blanketing the fermenting beer—called 'fixed air'—was known to kill mice suspended in it. Carbon dioxide ( Chemical formula:) is a Chemical compound composed of two Oxygen Atoms covalently bonded to a single Priestley found water thus treated had a pleasant taste and he offered it to friends as a refreshing drink. In 1772 Priestley published a paper entitled Impregnating Water with Fixed Air in which he describes dripping oil of vitriol (or sulfuric acid as it is now called) onto chalk to produce carbon dioxide gas, and encouraging the gas to dissolve into an agitated bowl of water. In 1771 Swedish chemistry professor Torbern Bergman independently invented a similar process to make carbonated water. Today, carbonated water is made by passing pressurized carbon dioxide through water. The pressure increases the solubility and allows more carbon dioxide to dissolve than would be possible under standard atmospheric pressure. Solubility is the characteristic Physical property referring to the ability of a given substance the Solute, to dissolve in a Solvent. Solvation, commonly called dissolution, is the process of attraction and association of Molecules of a Solvent with molecules or Ions of a When the bottle is opened, the pressure is released, allowing the gas to come out of the solution, thus forming the characteristic bubbles.

In the US, carbonated water was commonly known by the name of soda water until World War II. During the Great Depression, it was also referred to as two cents plain, a reference to its place as the cheapest drink available at the soda fountain. In the 1950's new terms such as sparkling water and seltzer water began to be used. The term seltzer water is a genericized trademark that comes from the German brand Selters[1], which is produced and bottled in Nieder-Selters, Germany. A genericized trademark (also known as a generic trademark or proprietary eponym) is a Trademark or Brand name that has become the colloquial Selters (Taunus is a community with 8000 inhabitants north of Bad Camberg in Limburg-Weilburg district in Hesse, Germany. Flavored carbonated water is also commercially available. It differs from sodas in that it contains flavors (usually fruit flavors such as lemon, lime, orange, or raspberry) but no sugar.

Health effects

Sparkling mineral water is a negligible cause of dental erosion. While the dissolution potential of sparkling water is greater than still water, levels remain low: by comparison, soft drinks cause tooth decay at a rate of several hundred times that of regular sparkling water. Soft drink is a beverage that does not contain Alcohol. Carbonated soft drinks are commonly known as soda soda pop pop, or De-gassing of a sparkling mineral water reduces its dissolution potential, but the total levels are still relatively low, suggesting that carbonation of drinks may not be an important factor per se in causing dental erosion. [3]

Intake of carbonated beverages has not been associated with increased bone fracture risk in observational studies, and the net effect of carbonated beverage constituents on the amount of calcium in the body is negligible, leaving carbonated water as harmless as regular water. [3]

carbonated water

-noun

  1. Water containing carbon dioxide dissolved in it under pressure. This is not to be confused with Soda Water which is an entirely different substance because if it lost it's carbonation, it would be called de-carbonated soda water.
