The Canberra International Film Festival began in 1996. All the films shown have been Canberra premieres, and many of them have also been Australian premieres. History

The festival was first known as the Australian International Film Festival, initiated by the University of Canberra Convocation and held from 11 to 13 October 1996. The University of Canberra, also known as UC, is a University located in Canberra, ACT, the capital of Australia. [2] In 1996, it showed 14 films, 12 of which were foreign. [3]

In 1999 the coordination of the festival was taken over by the School of Creative Communication[2] and in 2002 the festival was not held as it was handed over to a non-profit committee funded by the Australian Capital Territory Government. } The Australian Capital Territory (ACT is the Capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia and its smallest self-governing internal territory

In 2006, an unrelated Melbourne based Australian International Film Festival was launched. The Australian International Film Festival, or AIFF, is a Melbourne festival that was launched in 2006
