Calvin, Don't Jump! started as the solo recording project of J. Kirk Pleasant, a musician with extensive connections to the Elephant 6 Collective. The Elephant 6 Recording Company (or simply Elephant 6) is a collective of American musicians who spawned some of the most notable independent bands of the 1990s including Before moving to Canada, he contributed to releases from bands like the Olivia Tremor Control, Black Swan Network, and Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't. The Olivia Tremor Control was an Athens Georgia Indie rock band in the mid- to late 1990s which along with The Apples in Stereo and Black Swan Network is a musical side project of The Olivia Tremor Control. Pipes You See Pipes You Don't is the side project of The Olivia Tremor Control keyboardist Peter Erchick. His own albums have featured contributions from musicians like Scott Spillane (Neutral Milk Hotel, The Gerbils), Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel, A Hawk And A Hacksaw), John D'Azzo (The Gerbils), as well as Peter Erchick, Eric Harris, and John Fernandez (all of the Olivia Tremor Control). Scott Spillane is one of the leaders of the Athens Georgia, USA band The Gerbils. Neutral Milk Hotel was an American indie Folk band. The band's chief Songwriter, Jeff Mangum, played with a number of other The Gerbils are an Indie rock band that formed in Athens GA in 1998 Jeremy Barnes is best known as the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel. To date Pleasant has released three full-length albums under this name, as well as four 7" singles, a cd-r of live recordings, and a rare cassette album titled Notes From The Undersound. His most recent album, Conscious of Conscience marks his first true solo full-length, drawing on assistance from no outside collaborators.

Early in 2007, Pleasant announced that what had begun as a solo project would expand into a four-piece band, geared towards a poppier, more guitar driven sound. The band now features Pleasant (vocals and guitar), Nathan Matthews (bass), Lee-Ann Sheel (drums), and Shinobu Hata (keyboards).
