Halsted was born at Venice, New York. Venice is a Town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1286 at the 2000 census He studied at Michigan State University and at Harvard (D. In 1885, he began teaching botany at Iowa State and in 1889, he moved on to Rutgers in New Jersey.
