Joost Bürgi |
Byrgius is a lunar crater located in the western part of the Moon, near the limb. Selenographic coordinates are used to refer to locations on the surface of Earth 's Moon. Joost Bürgi, or Jobst Bürgi ( February 28 1552, Lichtensteig, Switzerland - January 31 1632)active primarily In the broadest sense the term impact crater can be applied to any depression natural or manmade resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with larger body As a result the Byrgius crater appears strongly oval in form due to foreshortening. To the northwest is the nearly ruined Lamarck crater. Lamarck is a lunar crater in the southwest part of the Moon. The northern portion of the crater is overlaid by the Darwin walled plain. The rim of Byrgius is worn and eroded, with the 'Byrgius A' crater overlaying the eastern rim and 'Byrgius D' laying across the northwest. The floor is relatively flat and undistinguished by significant craterlets. The crater 'Byrgius A' possesses its own ray system that have a radius of over 400 kilometers. A ray system comprises the radial streaks of fine Ejecta thrown out during the formation of an Impact crater. The kilometre ( American spelling: kilometer) symbol km is a unit of Length in the Metric system, equal to one thousand
Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Byrgius crater.
