After his first wife's early death in 1772 he married secondly Frances Bankes, daughter of Sir Henry Bankes, in 1775. They had six children. Lord Brownlow died in December 1808, aged 64, and was succeeded in his titles by his eldest son John Cust, who was created Earl Brownlow in 1815.
