It was first recorded in year 1574 as Bruntalo.
The municipality had 227 inhabitants in 1669, which declined to 90 in 1795. It then increased to 173 in 1850, before again decreasing, to 133 in 1900, 92 in 1950 and 50 in 2000.
In 2004 the municipality was merged with the other, neighboring municipalities Broglio, Fusio, Menzonio, Peccia and Prato-Sornico to form a new and larger municipality Lavizzara.
