The county borough lies at the geographical heart of south Wales. Its land area of 285 square kilometres stretches 20 km from east to west and occupies the Llynfi, Garw and Ogmore valleys. Young people suicides

The Bridgend area gained prominence in 2007-8 after an unusually high number of suicides among young people were reported as taking place in the area. Estyn ( Welsh (verb to extend) is the office of Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales. Maesteg Comprehensive School (Welsh Ysgol Gyfun Maesteg) is a Comprehensive school situated in the town of Maesteg in the South Wales Valleys From February 2007 to June 2008, 21 young people from Bridgend committed suicide[1]. Police and coroners have denied any link between the deaths[2].
