Breva began as a group of friends playing cover songs in Daniel Martinez's room on weekends. They soon began writing their own music and in 2003, Breva recorded a 4 track demo CD. After playing only a few shows, Daniel Martinez departed from the band to attend college. Left without a bassist, Breva pursued a replacement and soon recruited Brandon Fernandez.
As Breva played local venues, they continued writing more songs for their first release, a self titled and self recorded eleven track album. It was an experiment that illustrates the bands visions that would later be more apparent on their debut EP, The Great Communicator.
The Great Communicator, released in September of 2007, is an eclectic mix of sounds. After a handful of songs were written and prepared for pre-production, Breva enlisted Robert "Flossy" Cheek (Deftones, RX Bandits, Tera Melos,) to take the lead in production and engineering . Five songs were recorded at The Hanger Studios, and were then mixed and mastered by Jay Trammell of Fat Cat Recording Studios, bringing magnitude to the EP.
In each of the five tracks that appear on The Great Communicator, drummer John Dutra and bassist Brandon Fernandez lay the foundation of rhythms for guitar players Tim Pritchard and Phong Ho to express their musical diversity. Fittingly, vocalist Andrew Mills adds yet another layer of melody and rhythmic patterns, with mysterious lyrical stories that capture the listeners curiosity to achieve a sound that is both pleasing to the ear, and mind.
Breva's influences vary from Grunge Rock heroes Soundgarden and Nirvana, to Tool, all the way across the musical spectrum to Bjork and Radiohead
