The Book Cliffs Range is a mountain range in western Colorado and eastern Utah. A mountain range is a chain of Mountains bordered by highlands or separated from other mountains by passes or valleys The State of Colorado ( or chiefly by nonresidents) is a state located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States of America. The State of Utah (ˈjuːtɔː or) is a western state of the United States.

Description and history

Stretching nearly 200 miles from east to west, the Book Cliffs mountain range begins where the Colorado River descends south through De Beque Canyon into the Grand Valley (near Palisade, Colorado) to Price Canyon (near Helper, Utah). The Grand Valley is an extended populated valley approximately 30 miles (48 km long and 5 miles (8 km wide located along the Colorado River in Mesa County in Palisade is a Statutory Town in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. Helper is a city in Carbon County, Utah about 120 miles southeast of Salt Lake City and 7 miles northwest of the city of Price. The range is largely composed of sedimentary materials. The name of the range comes from the cliffs of Cretaceous sandstones which cap many south facing buttes that appear similar to a shelf of books. The Book Cliffs are within the Colorado Plateau geologic province. The Colorado Plateau, also called the Colorado Plateaus Province, is a physiographic region of the Intermontane Plateaus, roughly centered on the

Stratigraphy

There are several sedimentary cycles visible in the cliffs (perhaps up to seven or eight). The Book Cliffs of southeastern Utah and western Colorado are one of the world's best places to study sequence stratigraphy. The State of Utah (ˈjuːtɔː or) is a western state of the United States. The State of Colorado ( or chiefly by nonresidents) is a state located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States of America. Sequence stratigraphy is a relatively new branch of Geology that attempts to link relative Sea-level changes to Sedimentary deposits In the 1980s, Exxon scientists used the Cretaceous strata of the Book Cliffs to develop the science of sequence stratigraphy. Exxon is a brand of fuel sold by ExxonMobil. History Exxon formally replaced the Esso, Enco, The Cretaceous (kriːˈteɪʃəs, usually abbreviated 'K' for its German translation "Kreide" is a geologic period and system, reaching from the end of Sequence stratigraphy is a relatively new branch of Geology that attempts to link relative Sea-level changes to Sedimentary deposits The Book Cliffs have preserved excellent strata of the foreland basin of the ancient Western Interior Seaway that stretched north south from the Gulf of Mexico to the Yukon in the Cretaceous time. The Western Interior Seaway, also called the Cretaceous Seaway, the Niobraran Sea, and the North American Inland Sea, was a huge inland Sea The Gulf of Mexico ( Spanish: Golfo de México) is the ninth largest Body of water in the world Yukon (ˈjuːkɒn is the westernmost and smallest of Canada's three territories. Earth scientists from the world over visit the Book Cliffs to view analogues of what they are exploring for in the subsurface.
