When the constituency was first formed it comprised the Urban District of Bolsover and the Rural Districts of Blackwell and Clowne. History

Largely a former mining area, the constituency is a safe Labour seat, held by the voluble and often controversial Dennis Skinner, dubbed "The Beast of Bolsover" while his party were in opposition, although since Labour were elected to power in 1997 he has kept a somewhat lower profile.
