In 1974 the Local Government District of Bolsover was formed with identical boundaries to the constituency. Bolsover is a town in Derbyshire, England, near Chesterfield.

Largely a former mining area, the constituency is a safe Labour seat, held by the voluble and often controversial Dennis Skinner, dubbed "The Beast of Bolsover" while his party were in opposition, although since Labour were elected to power in 1997 he has kept a somewhat lower profile.
