Blake's was originally a flash lock, and once owned by the then Kennet & Avon Company. Early locks were designed with a single gate known as a flash lock. It was converted to a timber-constructed pound lock in 1802 to improve navigation from the Thames into the River Kennet enabling boats to travel all the way to the Bristol area. A pound lock is type of lock that is used almost exclusively nowadays on Canals and Rivers A pound lock has a chamber (the pound) with Bristol ( ˈbrɪstəl is a city, Unitary authority and ceremonial county in South West England, west of London The lock retains its manual beams (not the originals, new beams were fitted in 2006), so far avoiding the progress towards hydraulic power. Next to the lock is the riverside museum which tells the story of Reading's two rivers - the Kennet and the Thames. The museum occupies two former industrial buildings, the Screen House and the Turbine House. [3]
