Toohey started his career in 1981 with the Geelong Cats, with whom he played for five years. Geelong Football Club, nicknamed The Cats, is a professional Australian rules football club based in the city of Geelong. He then moved north to Sydney and earned All Australian selection in 1987. Two years later, he topped the Swans' goal kicking charts courtesy of spending half of the season at full forward.
