Bent Sørensen (b. July 18, 1958) is a Danish composer. Sørensen studied composition with Ib Nørholm at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and with Per Nørgård at the Jutland Music Academy. Ib Nørholm (born January 24, 1931 in Søborg, Copenhagen) is a Danish Composer and Organist. The Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen was founded in 1867 by the composer Niels Wilhelm Gade. Per Nørgård (b July 13, 1932 in Gentofte, Denmark) is one of the most important Danish composers of the twentieth century

Sørensen's mature works create a sense of decay that is emotionally similar to viewing an aging visual artwork. There is a sense of compromised beauty. Sørensen achieves this by treating major/minor tonalities with microtonal inflections and blurring the harmonies with glissandi. Microtonal music is Music using microtones — intervals of less than an equally spaced Semitone. Examples of this technique can be found in his trombone concerto "Birds and Bells", a work for orchestra and choir "Echoing Garden", and his violin concerto "Sterbende Gärten", which took the prestigious Nordic Music Prize in 1996. The Nordic Council Music Prize is awarded annually by NOMUS the Nordic Music Committee His early works deal with folksong in prosaic way. Sørensen has composed in a variety of mediums, including orchestra, choir, chamber ensemble and solo instruments, but notably he has not composed any electroacoustic music.
