Black grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Las Cruces is the second most populous city in New Mexico, the County seat of Doña Ana County, and a United States Metropolitan Statistical Area He was trained as a large-animal veterinarian at New Mexico State University and Colorado State University, but began writing and speaking in the early 1980s. New Mexico State University, or NMSU is a Land-grant university that has its main campus in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Colorado State University is a public institution of higher learning located in Fort Collins, Colorado in the United States. The 1980s was the decade spanning from January 1 1980 to December 31 1989. Black left his veterinary career soon afterwards, and since has published over a dozen books of fiction, poetry, and commentary.
