A notable event in the history of Barneveld is the story of Jan van Schaffelaar, a cavalry commander in the Hook and Cod wars who jumped off the church tower in 1482 in order to save the lives of his men. Jan van Schaffelaar was a cavalry officer working for David of Burgundy, the Bishop of Utrecht during the Hook and Cod wars. The Hook and Cod wars (Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten comprise a series of wars and battles in Holland between 1350 and 1490

Barneveld is known worldwide as the cradle of the Baan Company, founded there in 1978 by Jan Baan. Baan was a longtime leader in the ERS-market.
