A notable event in the history of Barneveld is the story of Jan van Schaffelaar, a cavalry commander in the Hook and Cod wars who jumped off the church tower in 1482 in order to save the lives of his men. Jan van Schaffelaar was a cavalry officer working for David of Burgundy, the Bishop of Utrecht during the Hook and Cod wars. The Hook and Cod wars (Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten comprise a series of wars and battles in Holland between 1350 and 1490
