The Barkly Tableland is one of the five regions in the Northern Territory, Australia. The Northern Territory is a federal territory of Australia, occupying much of the center of the mainland continent as well as the central northern regions For a topic outline on this subject see List of basic Australia topics. It is located in the eastern part of the territory and covers 283,648km² which is 21% of the territories land.

The Barkly region has the lowest population of any region in the Northern Territory, with a population of just over 5,900 people, most live in the main town of Tennant Creek and Renner Springs which is home to half of the regions population[1]. Tennant Creek is a town located in the Northern Territory of Australia. Renner Springs is a location in the Northern Territory of Australia

Nathaniel Buchanan was the first European to explore the region. Nathaniel Buchanan (1826 – 23 September 1901) was an Australian pioneer Pastoralist, Drover and explorer He was searching for pastoral lands.

Barkly has a diverse economy with Agriculture, fishing, and defence the biggest producers of the regions economy. The region attracts more than 140,000 tourists average each year.

The Georgina River system originates on the Barkly Tableland. The Georgina River is the north-westernmost of the three major rivers of the Channel Country in western Queensland that flow in extremely wet years into Lake Tarrabool Lake, the largest wooded swamp in tropical Australia, when completely filled, is located in the west of the Tablelands. Physiograpahy

The Barkly Tableland is a distinct physiographic province of the larger West Australian Shield division. Australian Shield, also called the Western Australian Shield or Western Plateau, occupies more than half of the continent of Australia. It includes the Mueller Plateau and Sandover-Pituri Platform physiographic sections.
