The type species of this genus is the barbel, Cyprinus barbus, now called Barbus barbus. Barbus barbus is a species of freshwater Fish in the Cyprinidae family of Minnows and Carps.

Members of Barbus have a great deal of similarity to the genus Puntius and many species have been relocated back and forth in taxonomic debates. Puntius is a Genus of Ray-finned fishes in the family Cyprinidae of the order Cypriniformes.

The name comes from the fact that most of the members of the genera have a pair of barbels on their mouths which they sometimes use to search for food at the bottom of the water.
