Azerbaijan made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, as ITV became an active member of the EBU before the contest was scheduled to take place. İctimai Televiziya və Radio Yayımları Şirkəti, or İTV, is a public Television channel in Azerbaijan. Previously, another broadcaster, AzTV, wanted to participate in 2007, but EBU rules did not allow this as AzTV was not an active member of the EBU. AzTV, or Azeri TeleVision, is the national broadcaster for Azerbaijan. AzTV were denied active EBU membership on June 18, as they were considered too connected to the Azerbaijani government. [1]
On July 5, however, another Azerbaijani broadcaster - the public channel ITV - became a full EBU member [2] and on October 15 were given permission to take part by the EBU. İctimai Televiziya və Radio Yayımları Şirkəti, or İTV, is a public Television channel in Azerbaijan. [3]
In 2006, Azerbaijani mass-media complained that the official website of Eurovision song contest showed the first Armenian representative André's place of birth as Nagorno-Karabakh, despite the latter being de jure part of Azerbaijan. André (Անդրե born in 1979 is a popular Pop star of Armenia, winning the Best Male Singer trophy at the Armenian Music Awards in both 2004 and 2005 For the republic see Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Nagorno-Karabakh is a Region in the South Caucasus.
