Awdal (Somali: Awdal) is one of the six regions in Somaliland. Somali ( Af Soomaali, الصوماليه is a member of the East Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family spoken by ethnic Somalis Its capital is Borama. It is bordered by Ethiopia, Djibouti, the Somaliland region of Woqooyi Galbeed and the Gulf of Aden. Awdal region is relatively affluent, contrasting the perception of the Horn of Africa as being war-torn and famine-stricken. The Horn of Africa (alternatively Northeast Africa, and sometimes Somali Peninsula; shortened to HOA) is a Peninsula in East Africa The chaos of the Somali Civil War and its aftermath has not ravaged this area quite so much as the rest of the country. The Somali Civil War is an armed conflict in Somalia that started in 1988 For example, the residents of Awdal enjoy the region's most advanced telecommunications network, with fairly reliable cell phone service and internet access. Awdal is also the home of Amoud University. Amoud University is a University located in Boorama. It was officially inaugurated on November 4th, 1998.

A modern separatist movement, known as the Awdal Republic[1], sought independence in 1995 when Somalia began to dissolve after the downfall of Mohamed Siad Barre.
