Background and release

As ordinarily Farmer released a studio album every four years, this sixth studio album was perhaps the most expected one. As a result, in 2003, the first rumors about a new album's recording went round, but only a compilation (Remixes) was released at that time, especially to make the fans wait because they wanted a new studio album. A remix is an alternative version of a song different from the original version At the end of 2004, Pascal Nègre, the Universal's director, said in the media that this album would be a double album. A double album is an audio Album which spans two units of the primary medium in which it is sold (especially records and Compact Discs. Other rumours evoked duets with artists such as Benjamin Biolay, Diam's or Lara Fabian[2] [3]. A duet is a Musical composition or piece for two Performers In Classical music the term is most often used for a composition for two singers Benjamin Biolay (born 20 January 1973 is a French singer songwriter musician actor and Record producer. Diam's (real name: Mélanie Georgiades, born July 25, 1980 in Cyprus) is a French-language rap artist of French and Lara Fabian (born Lara Crokaert January 9, 1970 in Etterbeek, Belgium) is an international Belgian - Italian

Later, the album's release was officially postponed to early 2005, then for March and for April 4. Events 1581 - Francis Drake completes a circumnavigation of the world and is knighted by Elizabeth I. The album was eventually composed of a single CD with a total of 15 titles (the largest number of songs on a Farmer's album). For the first time on a Farmer's album, one of the track contains a hidden song. Finally, at the press conference on December 9,[4] Farmer revealed the album's name : Avant que l'ombre. . . and said there would be no duets. With this album, Farmer abandoned the American musicians who had worked with her since Anamorphosée and collaborated again with several musicians from the beginning of her career. Anamorphosée is the fourth studio album by Mylène Farmer, released on October 17 1995. [5]

The different photographs of the booklet were directed by Dominique Isserman[6] and cost about 85,000 euros[7]. She also made the cover's photo, on which Farmer is lengthened, "asleep as Sleeping Beauty on an ochre and shades of red background". Lyrics and music

According to Laurent Boutonnat, this album is more acoustic and electronic than the previous ones he had produced. Laurent Pierre Marie Boutonnat (born June 14[[ 961]] in Paris) is a French Musician and director of films and music videos [13] [14] A newspaper said : "The style is the same, but the sounds evolve : more acoustic sounds mixed with electro and keyboards. Farmer sings with a voice more natural than usual". [15] This album is "a continuation of the singer's discography", but with a "certain calm in the prose", with a "majority of ballads". [16] In this album, Farmer's voice is "filled with softness and fragility". For one of the first time, she sings in low notes. [5]

With this album, "Boutonnat opens his production to new instruments" : the clarinet ("Redonne-moi") and the vibraphone ("Avant que l'ombre..."). The clarinet is a Musical instrument in the Woodwind family The name derives from adding the suffix -et meaning little to the Italian word " Redonne-moi " is a 2005 song recorded by the French artist Mylène Farmer. The vibraphone, sometimes called the vibraharp or simply the vibes, is a Musical instrument in the mallet subfamily of the percussion family " Avant que l'ombre " is a song recorded by the French artist Mylène Farmer in a studio version in 2005 and in a live version at the time [17]

The album deals with the "apprehension of a woman facing the death with after all the satisfaction to have loved". [16] It mainly talk of sex, death and religion. [18] The lyrics are "slightly disturbing", are "sometimes important", and there is some "humor". [19] About the album's content, Farmer said : "I very selfishly continues to talk about me, my shadows, my lights". [20] [21]

Critical reception

The journalist Benoît Cachin considers this album was less sophisticated than the previous ones. A journalist (also called a newspaperman) is a person who practices Journalism, the gathering and dissemination of information about current events trends Among the subjects tackled there are religion, literature, sexuality, hope for a better life, love (for the first time, a happy love), the revolt, the dream and the self-mockery. Although the album appears to be "consistent and uniform", it is confusing by its texts "particularly abstruse". Some of them have many puns and literary references not really known to the general public[8]. A pun (or paronomasia) is a Phrase that deliberately exploits confusion between similar-sounding Words for humorous or Rhetorical

Some media considered that this album doesn't contain any big surprises : "Farmer's voice is still light, fragile, sometimes scrapie" to cause more emotion. The piano gives the tempo but the strings dominate for creating "a labyrinthine atmosphere"[22]. The piano is a Musical instrument played by means of a keyboard that produces sound by striking steel strings with Felt covered hammers The string section is the largest body of the standard Orchestra and consists of bowed String instruments of the Violin family. Caroline Bee believes that this album is too similar to the previous ones and lacks innovation. [23] This album is a "distressing repeatition of her old hits" (Actu02). [24] "Disappointing", with "ethereal chords", "songs stretched and similar" (Télé Star). [25] "Her album is not revolutionary. (. . . ) Certain chords are even fuddy-duddy. (. . . ) A mixed success" (Télé 2 Semaines). [26] "Nothing is very surprising nor really new. Always this voice on the wire, at the edge of the crack. Always this dark romanticism bathed in mystical, erotic, and morbid image more or less woolly" (Le Journal du dimanche). [27]

According to Rolling Stone, this album has a "great sweetness" but "ultimately suffers from a major flaw : it is the sixth album from an artist whom everyone expects too". [28] On the whole, the album was well-received in the media, particularly by the French newspaper Le Monde. Le Monde (The World is a [17]
