Austin R. Mast is a research botanist. Born in 1972, he obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000. Year 1972 ( MCMLXXII) was a Leap year starting on Saturday (link will display full calendar of the Gregorian calendar. "PhD" redirects here for other uses see PhD (disambiguation. 2000 ( MM) was a Leap year that started on Saturday of the Common Era, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. He is currently an assistant professor within the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (FSU), and has been director of FSU's Robert K. Godfrey Herbarium since August 2003. Florida State University (commonly referred to as Florida State or FSU) is a public Research University located in Tallahassee [1]
One of his main areas of research is the phylogenetics of Grevilleoideae, a subfamily of Proteaceae. Grevilleoideae is a subfamily of the Proteaceae Family of Flowering plants. Proteaceae is a family of Flowering plants. Mainly restricted to the Southern Hemisphere, it is a fairly large family with around 80 genera In 2005 he showed the genus Banksia to be paraphyletic with respect to Dryandra,[2] He subsequently transferred all Dryandra taxa to Banksia, publishing over 120 taxonomic names in the process. Banksia is a Genus of around 170 Species in the Plant family Proteaceae. In Phylogenetics, a group of organisms is said to be paraphyletic if the group contains its most recent common ancestor but does not contain all [3]
He has recently started work on the Deep South Plant Specimen Imaging Project, which seeks to create a repository of annotated high-resolution digital images of plant specimens within the East Gulf Coastal Plain, a region with a very high diversity of rare and endangered plants. The Gulf Coastal Plain extends from the Florida Parishes of Louisiana over most of Mississippi, some of western Tennessee and Kentucky [4]
