Due to the increasing demand for new numbers, area code 505 was split on October 7, 2007. Northwestern and central New Mexico, including the Albuquerque metropolitan area, Santa Fe, and Farmington, continue to be served by the 505 area code, while the remainder of the state will switch to area code 575. Santa Fe ( Navajo: Yootó is the Capital of the state of New Mexico. Farmington ( Tótah) is a city in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. Area code 575 is an area code in the State of New Mexico, intended to serve the remainder of the state outside of the Albuquerque, Santa Fe, ^[1] The issue was decided in 2006 by vote of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, with a 3-2 majority in favor of allowing the Albuquerque area to keep the old area code. Year 2006 ( MMVI) was a Common year starting on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar. ^[2]

The question of how to implement a new area code was a contentious one. The need for a new code had been clear since at least 2000^[3], but the PRC's initial votes for Albuquerque and Santa Fe to switch to a new area code were met with vocal opposition and even death threats. 2000 ( MM) was a Leap year that started on Saturday of the Common Era, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. A death threat is a threat, often made anonymously, against a person to kill him or her ^[4] Amid heightening tensions between the urban and rural areas of the state, the commission eventually chose to put off the decision until 2006 after a new plan to conserve numbers made the immediate addition of a new code unnecessary. ^[5]
