Andover is the oldest community in Henry County, and was founded in 1835 by the Reverend Ithamar Pillsbury, who had fought in the War of 1812 before becoming a minister. It was established as an English colony, and was later "discovered" by the Swedes, who began to move in during the 1840's.
The Jenny Lind chapel was founded in 1850, and is still there, serving as an invaluable treasure of Swedish-American culture. The Jenny Lind chapel is the birthplace of the Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish national Lutheran Churches in America.
