History

The original location of Allendale was Timberville, 1. 1 miles South of the current location. When the railroad was to come through the region, the town was moved to its current location to be on the railroad. This is where the town got the name Allendale, named after a railroad man named Allen. Allendale is home to the First National Bank of Allendale, the oldest bank in the county, and the only bank in the county that survived the Great Depression.

1989 tornado

On January 7, 1989 an F4 tornado leveled a good portion of the town of Allendale and injured 55 of its residents. The Fujita scale ( F-Scale) or Fujita-Pearson scale, is a scale for rating Tornado intensity based on the damage tornadoes inflict on human-built structures A tornado is a violent rotating column of air which is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a Cumulonimbus cloud or in rare cases the base of a Cumulus ^[2][3] The tornado directly impacted Allendale's school, destroying the grade school portion. Ironically, the high school portion, which had been condemned two years before withstood the storm with minimal damage. Relief funds paid to repair much of the damage, and build a brand new school, and used by the elementary and middle school students of District 17.

As of the census^[5] of 2000, there were 528 people, 192 households, and 142 families residing in the village.
