The four color theorem (also known as the four color map theorem) states that given any plane separated into regions such as a political map of the states of a country
Kempe studied at Trinity College, Cambridge where Arthur Cayley was one of his teachers. Trinity College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Arthur Cayley ( August 16 1821 - January 26 1895) was a British Mathematician. He graduated with distinction in 1874. Despite his interest in mathematics he became a barrister, specializing in the ecclesiastical law. In 1877 Kempe rediscovered a straight line linkage and published his influential lectures on the subject. The Peaucellier-Lipkin linkage (or Peaucellier-Lipkin cell) invented in 1864 was the first linkage capable of transforming rotary motion into perfect straight-line In 1879 he wrote his famous "proof" of the four color theorem, shown incorrect by Percy Heawood in 1890. The four color theorem (also known as the four color map theorem) states that given any plane separated into regions such as a political map of the states of a country Percy John Heawood ( 8 September, 1861 Newport Shropshire, England - 24 January, 1955 Durham, England Much later, his work lead to fundamental concepts such as the Kempe chain and unavoidable sets. In Mathematics, a Kempe chain is a device used mainly in the study of the Four colour theorem.
Kempe (1886) revealed a rather marked philosophical bent, and much influenced Charles Peirce. Charles Sanders Peirce (pronounced purse) (September 10 1839 &ndash April 19 1914 was an American Logician mathematician, philosopher Kempe also discovered what are now called multisets, although this fact was not noted until long after his death. In Mathematics, a multiset (or bag) is a generalization of a set.
Kempe was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1881.
