Biography

Caffi was born in Rovato (province of Brescia), in Northern Italy. The Province of Brescia is a Province in Lombardy, Italy. It borders with the Province of Sondrio in the N and NW the Province of Related categories Central Italy Southern Italy Insular Italy Northeast Italy

He spent three years in Italian Formula Three from 1984 to 1986, finishing runner-up in 1984 and 1985, then 3rd in 1986. Formula Three, also called Formula 3 or F3, is a class of open-wheel formula racing. 1986 also saw him land a one-off drive with the Osella Formula One team, and Caffi scored a rare finish for them, coming home 11th. Osella is an Italian racing car manufacturer and former Formula One team based in Volpiano near Turin, Italy

The small Italian team were impressed by his sensible approach, and signed him for a full season for 1987. The Alfa Romeo powered car was uncompetitive and unreliable, Caffi never finishing once, though he was classified 12th at the San Marino Grand Prix. Alfa Romeo participated in Formula One, as both a constructor and engine supplier from to. The 1987 San Marino Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on May 3 1987 at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari, Imola. Nevertheless, the quiet Italian drew good notices for his attitude and skill in such a poor car (notably qualifying 16th for the Monaco Grand Prix). The 1987 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on May 31 1987 at the Circuit de Monaco, Monte Carlo.

For 1988, he switched to the new Scuderia Italia team who were running a Dallara chassis, again drawing good notices and peaking with 7th place at the Portuguese Grand Prix. Dallara Automobili is an Italian Chassis manufacturer for various Motor racing series being most notable for its near- Monopoly in Formula 3 The 1988 Portuguese Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on September 25 1988 at the Autódromo do Estoril, Estoril. 1989 saw the team expand to two cars, with Andrea de Cesaris taking the other, and a switch to Pirelli tyres. Andrea de Cesaris (born May 31 1959) is an Italian former race car driver Pirelli & C SpA ( is a diverse Multinational company based in Milan, Italy. Caffi impressed, finishing 4th at the Monaco Grand Prix, and running 2nd at the United States Grand Prix before de Cesaris knocked him off. The 1989 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at Monaco on May 7, 1989. The 1989 United States Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on June 4, 1989 in Phoenix Arizona. The second half of the season was less impressive as Pirelli struggled to find consistent race tyres, but was distinguished by Caffi starting 3rd at the Hungarian Grand Prix (though the aforementioned race tyres saw him finish 7th). The 1989 Hungarian Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at Hungaroring on August 13, 1989.

Caffi was noted as a promising talent, and was tempted to Arrows for 1990. Arrows Grand Prix International was a Formula One team active from 1977 to 2002 The team had been bought by the Japanese Footwork Corporation, and were planning a major championship assault in 1991 with a new Porsche V12 and Michele Alboreto, while 1990 was to be an interim year. Porsche has been successful in many branches of Motorsport, scoring a total of more than 28000 victories of which most have been scored by the Career 1976-1981 Junior Formulae Michele Alboreto started his career in 1976 racing in Formula Monza with a car he and his friends built known as the "CMR" Caffi injured himself in a pre-season cycling accident, missing the first race of the season, retiring from the second with exhaustion and failing to qualify for the third. His best finish of the year was 5th place at the attrition-filled Monaco Grand Prix, but Caffi generally gave solid, if unspectacular, displays elsewhere. The 1990 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on 27 May 1990 at Monaco.

1991 was to be an unmitigated disaster, sadly. The Porsche V12 was grossly overweight and seriously underpowered, and Caffi failed to qualify for the first four races. Porsche has been successful in many branches of Motorsport, scoring a total of more than 28000 victories of which most have been scored by the He then broke his jaw in a road car accident following the Monaco Grand Prix, ironically after he had escaped injury in a serious crash during the race weekend. The 1991 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at Monaco on May 12, 1991. Footwork then drafted in Stefan Johansson to cover, and when Caffi returned to fitness, he found the team were trying to keep the Swede on. Stefan Nils Edwin Johansson (born September 8, 1956) is a former Formula One driver from Sweden. He managed to get back into his seat via a legal injunction, but then failed to qualify for the next six races. He finally got through to the Japanese Grand Prix, finishing 10th, but Aguri Suzuki had already been announced as a replacement for 1992. The 1991 Japanese Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at Suzuka on October 20, 1991. is a former Racing driver from Japan. He participated in 88 Formula One Grands Prix and his most notable achievement in racing was 3rd place at the 1990 Japanese He again got through for the Australian Grand Prix, but had no drive for the following season. The 1991 Australian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on November 3 1991 at the Adelaide Street Circuit

He had no option but to sign for the new Andrea Moda team. Andrea Moda is an Italian fashion company owned by wealthy flamboyant playboy shoe designer Andrea Sassetti. However, registration problems with the FIA meant he managed no more than a few practice laps at the South African Grand Prix, and the team arrived late for the Mexican Grand Prix and were not allowed to run. The 1992 South African Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Kyalami on March 1 1992. The 1992 Mexican Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Mexico City on March 22, 1992. After this, Caffi was replaced by Roberto Moreno, and his time in Formula One was over. Career Substitute Moreno stood in for Nigel Mansell at Lotus at the 1982 Dutch Grand Prix after Mansell broke his wrist in the previous

After a brief career in Spanish and Italian Touring Cars, Caffi found his niche in sportscars, racing in GTs, FIA Sportscar, and ALMS.
