The Aeroflot Open is an annual open chess tournament played in Moscow and sponsored by the airline Aeroflot. Chess is a recreational and competitive Game played between two players. Moscow (Москва́ romanised: Moskvá, IPA: see also other names) is the Capital and the largest city of OJSC "AeroflotRussian Airlines" (ОАО «АэрофлотРоссийские авиалинии» () or Aeroflot (Аэрофлот as the airline is commonly It was established in 2002 and quickly grew out to be the strongest open tournament. The first edition counted around 80 grandmasters, while in the second edition already 150 grandmasters participated. The title Grandmaster is awarded to extremely strong Chess masters by the world chess organization FIDE. The tournament is played using the Swiss system.
