Howard graduated from Mount Holyoke College (then Mount Holyoke Female Seminary) in 1853. Mount Holyoke College is a liberal arts women's college in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Before joining Wellesley, she taught at Western College in Ohio and was principal of the Woman's Department of Knox College. Western College for Women was a women's college in Oxford, Ohio between 1855 and 1974 Knox College is a four-year Coeducational private liberal arts college located in Galesburg Illinois.

She was president of Wellesley from 1875-1881.
