He was born in Stockton, California to parents that were in the restaurant/nightclub business, and at the age of 5 learned to play alto sax. Stockton is a City in California and the seat of San Joaquin County (the fifth largest agricultural county in the United States When his parents moved him to another school district that needed a drummer, Ace (over his parents' objections) became the school drummer. Ace would sit in with the house band at his father's nightclub playing Sax and drums.
In 1964, being influenced by the Beatles and The Dave Clark Five, he took a fancy to his brother's electric guitar. The Beatles were a pop and rock band from Liverpool, England formed in 1960 The Dave Clark Five (also known as "The DC5" were an English Beat group, one of the few presenting something of a commercial threat to The Beatles While still playing drums in local bands, he found himself learning more and more guitar chord progressions.
Ace's mother died when he was 11 years old. At that time his brother would go off to Vietnam leaving his father to raise him alone. Ace would follow his brother's footsteps and enlist in the Navy six years later towards the end of the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, or the Vietnam Conflict, occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia It was in the US Navy that Ace founded his first professional band. A power trio called "Sky High" (Kerry Henry/bass and Toby Woodard/drums) that would perform in Japan in 1976.
After leaving the Navy with an honorable discharge in 1977, Ace would return to the San Francisco Bay Area and record his first single "Still Waiting" and "I can't love you no more". A military discharge is given when a member of the Armed forces is released from his or her obligation to serve He would eventually meet rock impressario Bill Graham and become a permanent part of the San Francisco music scene.
