Abergele is one of the 36 woredas in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Woreda (also spelled wereda) is an Administrative division of Ethiopia (managed by a local government equivalent to a District. Mehakelegnaw (or "The central " is a Zone in the Ethiopian Region of Tigray. Amhara (አማራ is one of the nine ethnic divisions ( Kililoch) of Ethiopia, containing the homeland of the Amhara people. The Tekezé River is a major river of Ethiopia, and forms a section the westernmost border of Ethiopia and Eritrea for part of its course Kola Tembien is one of the 36 Woredas in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Degua Tembien is one of the 36 Woredas in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Debubawi (or "Southern" is one of five Zones in the Ethiopian Region of Tigray. Towns in Abergele include Agbe and Yechila. Yechila (also known as Chilay) is a town in northern Ethiopia.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 77,979, of whom 38,779 were males and 39,200 were females; 4,075 or 5. Abergele is named for the historic district of Abergele, which Francisco Álvares notes had been part of Begemder, but was divided from it a few years before he arrived in Ethiopia in 1520. Begemder (also Gondar or Gonder after its capital) was a province in the northwestern part of Ethiopia. About a century later, Pedro Páez recorded that Abergele paid only a little less tribute than neighboring Tembien. Pedro Páez or Pêro Pais ( 1564 - May 25, 1622) was a Jesuit Missionary in Ethiopia.
