The bridge is just to the east of the town and is a concrete construction carrying a dual carriageway built as part of the two-mile £2. 4m Blunsdon-Cricklade Improvement opened in June 1988. The A419 is based on the Roman Ermin Street and there was a bridge close by prior to the construction of the present bridge. Ermin Street or Ermin Way (not to be confused with Ermine Street, which is further east is one of the great Roman roads of Britain
