While the show claims to do the makeover in 60 minutes this is not strictly true. The Crew arrive at 7am in the morning and generally don't finish filming until 6-7pm 12 hours later. An insider the show for explained what happens on the day "Generally we arrive at 7am in the morning and set up all the equipment, we then unload our van which has all the furniture and other bits that go in the house. This usually takes about an hour then its breakfast. After breakfast we start stripping the house down, removing wallpaper, putting masking tape on the walls, covering carpets, pulling out kitchens. While this is taking place the camera crew are filming interviews in each room explaining what the designer is going to do to the room. Also while this is happening all the furniture that is going to go into the makeover is being pre- built. "
The actual makeover does not start until 12-1pm a full 5 hours after the crew arrived.
Th e insider goes on "The 'makeover' starts about 12. 30pm after everything is ready, all the paint is in the rooms so when the whistle blows we can all run in and start straight away, there are a lot of us, around 40, and so painting doesn't take long. The problem we do have though is allowing the paint to dry if we need to do a second coat, if a second coat is needed we have been known to cheat a little bit and do this in the βTea Break'". . . dirty bastards. . .
"The 'Tea Break' can last anything up to 2 hours depending how much work we need to do in the makeover and we also cram in lunch" When asked if this was cheating the insider replied "On the show the tea break is shown and the clock is stopped. We might do some work in this but we want to do a good job for the people whose house we are making over"
The second half of the makeover kicks off after the 'Tea Break' has eventually finished. There are 3 cameras running around filming all the mayhem. When the "60 minutes" are up Terri blows the whistle to signal everyone to stop, but this is not what happens. The insider states " when the whistle blows, generally we are finished, but on some occasions there is still some work to do" to get around this the Camera crew film Terri doing the countdown in a room that is finished this allows work in the other rooms to continue until they are finished.
At the end of every show they state how much each makeover is worth.
All the furniture and accessories that go into the makeover are given to the show for free from companies in return for getting their products on the show.
The fifth series is currently on ITV, weekdays at 2pm and series Six is in production.
