3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for use on 3G mobile phones. Multimedia is media and content that utilizes a combination of different content forms. A container format is a computer file format that can contain various types of data compressed by means of standardized audio/video codecs. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project ( 3GPP) is a collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations to make a globally applicable third generation ( 3G 3G is the third generation of mobile phone standards and Technology, superseding 2

3GP is a simplified version of the MPEG-4 Part 14 (MP4) container format, designed to decrease storage and bandwidth requirements in order to accommodate mobile phones. An Internet media type, originally called a MIME type after MIME and sometimes a Content-type after the name of a header in several protocols whose value A container format is a computer file format that can contain various types of data compressed by means of standardized audio/video codecs. MPEG-4 Part 14, formally ISO / IEC 14496-142003, is a Multimedia Container format standard specified as a part of MPEG-4 It stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC or HE-AAC. MPEG-4 Part 2 is a Video compression technology developed by MPEG. H263 is a Video codec standard originally designed as a low-bitrate compressed format for Videoconferencing. H264 is a standard for Video compression. It is also known as MPEG-4 Part 10, or MPEG-4 AVC (for Advanced Video Coding) Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR is an Audio data compression scheme optimized for Speech coding. Adaptive Multi Rate – WideBand ( AMR-WB) is a Speech coding standard developed after the AMR using same technology like ACELP. Adaptive Multi Rate – WideBand plus ( AMR-WB+) is an audio Codec that extends AMR-WB. Advanced Audio Coding ( AAC) is a standardized lossy compression and encoding scheme for Digital audio. High Efficiency AAC ( HE-AAC) is a Lossy data compression scheme for Digital audio. A 3GP file is always big-endian, storing and transferring the most significant bytes first. It also contains descriptions of image sizes and bitrate. There are two different standards for this format:
Both are based on MPEG-4 and H.263 video, and AAC or AMR audio. H263 is a Video codec standard originally designed as a low-bitrate compressed format for Videoconferencing.
When transferred to a computer, 3GP movies can be viewed on Linux, Mac, and Windows platforms with programs such as VLC media player, RealPlayer, QuickTime, GOM Player and Media Player Classic.
