Many accredit the high-volume explosion of huge mainstream radio hits to the death of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain. Following Cobain's death in April of 1994, mainstream music began to shift away from the sound of grunge and opened the door for several new artists. Bands exhibiting an original sound became easy to market as they were no longer competing against a giant music-media movement (which grunge had become). With no clear music fad, record companies were willing to promote any band they felt had mass-appeal potential in order to see what would be the next big musical fad to catch the public's attention. This strategy worked too well as a wide variety of bands struck it big with major record releases in 1994. This so-called musical "vacuum," in which many independent artists were drawn into the mainstream continued on into 1995, which was another historically huge year for the music industry.
