In 1960s, Kip Wagner, a building contractor from Ohio, bought a metal detector and found a trove of silver and gold coins and other artifacts on the beach and submerged in the water. Kip Wagner and seven others formed the Real Eight Company, they were Dan Thompson, Del Long, Lou Ullian, Dr. Kip Kelso (the only non-diving member of the group), Harry Cannon, Bob Johnson and John Jones. Dr. Kip Kelso had research done in the archives in Seville Spain which revealed more clues to finding sunken treasure ships. In 1963 Kip Wagner continued his salvage operations by getting a lease from Florida State. It is recorded in the New York Times that he did his work well and meticulously continued his work returning 20 per cent back to the state of Florida. His nephew Rex Stocker found a captain's chain that was 11 feet 4 inches long made of gold fine links, this artifact was made in the orient and featured a whistle and a carpick.
